A Study on the Experience of Group Art Therapy for Elderly Women Living Alone in Permanent Rental Housing

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is what have elderly women living alone had an experience through a group art therapy, and what is the meaning and essence of the experience. Accordingly, three elderly women living alone in a permanent rental housing were conducted for 13 Group art therapy sessions twice a week for 60 minutes, except pre- and post-interviews. The result is as follow Giorgi's phenomenological research method, 8 components and 3 semantic structures were derived. First of all, the components are ¡®Expectations for Art Therapy¡¯, ¡®Spontaneous Exploration of the Past¡¯, ¡®looking at myself who has been old from a distance¡¯, ¡®Meaningful First Memory¡¯, ¡®Time to find out which I have buried¡¯, ¡®Communication within a small group¡¯, ¡®Satisfaction with art therapy using various senses¡¯ and ¡®Sprouting Hope¡¯. And semantic structures is ¡®relieving isolation and gaining emotional vitality through participation in group art therapy¡¯, ¡®experiencing in social relationships that exchange emotional support¡¯ and ¡®having room for self-care¡¯. The significance of this study is that group art therapy was even more meaningful in terms of eliminating isolation, being able to find their own individuality, and experiencing emotional support and social relationships. Finally, it can be supplement with quantitative research as qualitative data for art therapy research targeting the elderly along.
